Asuma’s fire jutsu strikes Hidan, but he receives the same damage. Hidan reveals his ability; once he licks an opponent’s blood and stands in a ritual circle drawn in blood, he is able to transfer all damage inflicted on him to that opponent, and puts this ability to use by stabbing himself to injure Asuma. Shikamaru, realizing how Hidan’s ability works, forces Hidan out of the circle and Asuma beheads him. Hidan’s immortality enables him to stay alive even with his head cut off, although he cannot move. Kakuzu sews Hidan's head back on with threads coming out of his body. Izumo and Kotetsu try to attack Kakuzu, but he manages to grab them by using his body threads. Hidan, now able to move again, returns to the circle and stabs himself with the blades of his scythe and his spear, mortally wounding Asuma.
